Independence Day

on July 4th, 2008 by mark

I love the 4th of July and I am indeed proud to be an American. I find nothing hokey in it, nothing divisive in the statement and I could no more avoid my patriotism than I could deny God, my family or my own life. No, the silliness of the left who has tried to turn patriotism into something wrong, narrow or even evil, has not worked with me. In fact, I’m inclined to think that my own ability to appreciate my home country allows me to appreciate and admire other people’s cultures as well.

Take Sofie–she’s from Belgium and we had several conversations in which she was fairly certain that her national identity had some impact on decisions she makes and things she does–as it should. The fact that I’m an American means something more than just my national origin–it’s a part of who I am.

I’ve avoided the blog the past couple of days mostly because I’ve been so busy with “paid writing work” and with Vacation Bible School at the church. By the time I sit down to relax, I stare at the page and think, “well–I could post here, or I could finish that piece on–whatever–and make a little money.” Guess which one I choose?

Today will be marked by our 2nd trip to the Mushovic household. They have two daughters, one of whom is close to Peanut’s age and there will be many other folk there–pool party and bbq. As they live at the top of a most prominent hill, they have a fabulous view of the Conejo Valley and we will watch fireworks from there. It was a blast last year and our friends the Perez’s will be there. They have a son Peanut’s age and all the kids get along really well.

As I wrote about previously, we will be sedating Scoop this afternoon which always makes me feel guilty. I know he doesn’t like it, but he is a nervous-nelly when it comes to loud noises and no doubt, there will be a few fireworks this evening.

Happy 4th of July!
